Digital Nomad Guide to Vienna, Austria 🎡

Vienna - it was so much fun spending last spring with you. 🥰😍🙏🏻🙌🏻

I grew up in Austria and this was my first extended time back since I moved to the US full-time to study and then live there. During my undergrad studies I lived in Vienna and I have such great memories from this time. In case you are wondering what I studied - it was economics, sociology, women’s studies and philosophy. I could not make up my mind and followed my curiosity, so I dove into various different subjects.

What makes my memories of Vienna so special to me is that it was the first time that I lived on my own and I felt a tremendous amount of freedom during these days. I have vivid memories of my first adventures in dating, working super hard for my university courses, of balmy summer nights in my apartment with those iconic high ceilings and of beautiful friendships. I caught my travel bug during these days too and embarked on my first trips to India, Israel & Jordon, Turkey, Greece, Tunisia and South Africa. It feels like yesterday as well as many lifetimes ago all at the same time.

Vienna now is much more international than I remember. It still has its unique charm and romance and in many ways it feels very much the same from when I lived there.

I definitely recommend spending some time here to explore the city and enjoy everything it has to offer - especially if you have an interest in music, art or simply want to experience life in a major European metropolis. Especially on a warm summer night Vienna has a magical charm that’s unique and I have not experienced this anywhere else. On those nights let serendipity guide you ✨ This said it is a great destination year-round (hint hint Christmas markets in December are magical as well 💗)

Here are my recommendations for places to work from, food, markets and other cool finds.

PLACES TO WORK FROM

ImpactHub Vienna — My favorite coworking office in Vienna with a focus on social entrepreneurship. They offer daily rates and it’s a great place to meet local entrepreneurs.
Palmenhaus — A spectacular greenhouse in Art Deco style next to the Hofburg palace that houses palm trees and other tropical plants. 🌴🌿 Pretty much perfection when it comes to work environment imo. Great wifi, coffee and cake, of course. In the summer you can sit outside and work overlooking the beautiful gardens.
Cafe Möbel — Furniture store meets cafe. They are open late and most people come to work, read or do crafts - it’s a perfect set up if you need to crank away for long hours. 🛋️
Cafe Prückel — My all-time favorite old school Viennese cafe that has everything from a gigantic selection of newspapers, cake for days, Viennese food (a very small vegan and gf selection though) and epic interior design. Come for a local immersion and stay for hours (which btw is part of the Viennese coffeehouse culture to spend long hours reading or meeting friends or for business, so no rush! ☕ 💫)
MuseumsQuartier — A huge complex housing museums, restaurants and other event spaces. In the summer it’s a beautiful and buzzing place to work outdoors.
Phil — Book store meets cafe. Loved working from there! Always got me in the zone. btw they have an amazing progressive book selection. 📘

FOOD

Mostly vegan and gluten free picks

NENI am Naschmarkt — Fancy hummus and other Mediterranean favorites. My favorite place for brunch or a meal when I am shopping at Naschmarkt.
Elefant & Castle — Indian fusion lunch spot. Suuuuuper yummy!!! 😍
Curry Insel — Sri Lankan restaurant that I love in case you are craving something spicy and tropical (coconut ftw 🌴🥥🥰)
Dancing Shiva — One of my favorite finds on this trip. It will be your go to place for superfoods and they have the most delicious raw vegan cakes and dishes. Small grocery store section and cafe. GOOOOOOOO! ❤️
Simply Raw Bakery — Probably my FAVORITE place to eat on this visit and I was there all.the.freaking.time 😍 They offer a raw take on Austrian dishes and the decor is beautiful as well. It is in the first district and I always love a reason to go there. Must try is the raw Sachertorte (chocolate cake)
The Art of Raw — Another great spot to replenish your super food collection, have a cup of delicious coffee and some raw vegan cake.
Scarabocchio —Hands down one of my favorite gluten-free pizza that I had anywhere!
Tian Bistro — Vegetarian restaurant with an urban feel and creative dishes.
Harvest-Bistrot — Vegan cafe with a great food selection that is furnished like a large living room with mismatching vintage furniture. Loved their weekend brunch!
Veganista — Vegan ice cream chain with stores around the city. Must try! 💗🌸

The raw version of a Sachertorte (the famous Austrian chocolate cake) at Simply Raw Bakery 🥰 🥰🥰10/10

GROCERY STORES, FOOD MARKETS AND REFORMHÄUSER

Denn’s Biomarkt — My go-to organic grocery store chain with a large variety of products and a great organic produce section
Naschmarkt — Oh where to start! Just spending time there replenishes me and gets my food creativity going. Whatever you need in the kitchen, you will find here. Fruit and vegetable stalls, bakeries, all kinds of food speciality stores, restaurants, Turkish, Indian and all kind of ethnic food markets, etc. Pretty much heaven 🌞🌈
Staudigl — Probably the best/fanciest Reformhaus in the city. They have two locations in the same street: Wollzeile (which has other unique stores, it’s a good street to stroll!), One of the stores focuses solely on natural cosmetics. If that’s your thing, GOOOOOOOO :)

Reformhaus Buchmüller — Very popular for lunch, be prepared to queue.
Naturkost St. Josef — Another great option in the 7th district.
Reformhaus Wallner — Their lunch offerings are incredible.
Sonnentor — Beautiful store for teas and spices.
btw REFORMHÄUSER are health food stores that usually offer lunch. They oftentimes have a wide array of natural remedies and cosmetics as well. Most of them have been around for decades and they are one of my favorite traditional treasures of the city. ❤️

RANDOM/OTHER COOL SPOTS

Grand Ferdinand — They are an upscale hotel with a beautiful rooftop, lounge/restaurant and they have a dorm for a more affordable option as well. Such a cool concept and vibe all around. One of my favorite finds on this trip.
Burggarten — My favorite park to read a book and daydream. 🌈✨
Sunsets at Belvedere Palace — The best time of the day to visit this beautiful spot. 🌇✨
